Humidity and Temperature Monitoring in Generators and Turbines
Efficiency and the reduction of toxic gas emissions into the environment are two primary objectives at power plants that use gas or steam turbines. Continuous monitoring of the air feeding the turbine provides vital information for controlling its temperature and humidity, which in turn increases efficiency and reduces emissions—primarily nitrogen oxides. Controlling the cooling system in generators—whether air-cooled or hydrogen-cooled—is very important for maintaining their efficiency and dielectric strength; if the humidity in the air or the hydrogen used is too high, the efficiency of the cooling system decreases and this can lead to equipment deterioration and a reduction in dielectric strength, which will ultimately shorten the service life or, in the worst case, trigger a total generator failure.
